Cannabis and Oral Health

Sometimes, there can be too much of a good thing. For instance, when some of your favorite things (like cannabis and coffee) stain your teeth.

Good news: there's an effective, quick, 2-ingredient natural teeth whitener you can use regularly - and that you likely already have in your kitchen cabinet. Bonus: Tumeric is loaded with oral health benefits, which can help reduce the risks of inhalation.

Cannabis & Oral Health

Unlike tobacco, the studies of cannabis use and oral health, including specifically its effects on teeth, are limited. However, the American Dental Association has identified a number of possible risks with smoking cannabis or vaping cannabis, including increased risk of periodontal complications such as caries (cavities), dry mouth (xerostomia), white patches inside the mouth (leukoplakia) as well as increased risk of mouth and neck cancers. Studies also found significantly higher rates of periodontitis among users, according to the ADA.

However, the other medicinal benefits of cannabis are likely to outweigh ceasing usage for many people treating certain health conditions like chronic pain, insomnia, anxiety, cancer, and much more. Many patients would still choose the possible health risks of cannabis over pharmaceuticals.

Other methods of ingestion may also be considered, such as cannabis edibles, topicals, or tinctures. Keep in mind that these methods still may contribute to dry mouth, which can lead to other oral health problems.

Mitigating the negative effects of cannabis smoking

Fortunately, for those who still choose to smoke or vape, there are some suggestions from dentists that can help reduce some of the negative risks of this form of ingestion. One of the most effective ways to relieve conditions like dry mouth is to simply stay hydrated with water. Avoid sugary drinks, which can lead to tooth decay. Regular brushing and flossing along with regular dental checkups are also important.

Naturally whiten teeth from mild cannabis staining and other discoloration

Many things can discolor teeth, such as coffee, wine, and unfortunately, even regular cannabis smoking. Professional and even at-home teeth whitening or teeth bleaching can be both uncomfortable and expensive. Fortunately, two ingredients you likely have right at home can be used to significantly reduce discoloration and naturally whiten your teeth.

What home remedy can I use to make my teeth whiter?

Tumeric is the powerhouse natural teeth whitener you probably already have in your kitchen cabinet. Combined with coconut oil, it creates an effective paste that can be used to gently remove stains.

Even better, turmeric is completely natural and free of the harsh and abrasive chemicals associated with conventional whitening solutions, which can cause moderate to severe tooth sensitivity, gum pain, gum recession, tooth enamel problems, and more, reports Healthline. Tumeric may actually improve oral health, lessening the risk of gum pain, inflammation, and disease, according to studies published by the National Library of Medicine.

While it may seem counter-intuitive to use turmeric, which can easily stain your fingers and/or clothes if accidently spilled, it surprisingly does have a whitening effect when used on teeth.  It’s also super easy to use. We tested it out and were very impressed by the results.

You’ll need:

  • Pure turmeric powder (organic if possible)
  • Filtered coconut oil (organic if possible)
  • A small dish for mixing
  • An old toothbrush (NOTE: not recommended to use electric toothbrush, as turmeric will stain bristles)

To use:

Simply mix some quality pure turmeric powder with a few dabs of coconut oil into a small bowl, and apply to teeth for two minutes. Brush off and rinse thoroughly with water, says Healthline. Note: Use an old toothbrush, as the turmeric will definitely stain.

If you're going to use for several consecutive days, you can prepare enough for a few days' worth in advance and store in the fridge (covered) for quick use. Coconut oil melts very quickly once it's in the mouth, but you may need to heat for several seconds before applying.

We tested out using this method for 3 days. While it may not replace all conventional whitening, it certainly will become a new complimentary method to add into the regime! Added bonus: there was no sensitivity and the effects were really quick!
